The Vision of La Leche League is to realize, deepen and share the love and wisdom found in the breastfeeding relationship.
The following are statements of LLLI's philosophy:
We have always made it a priority to follow the Purpose of La Leche League:
The success of La Leche League is based on our use of Parent-to-Parent support. We recognize that we each bring different histories and needs to our meetings. We value the experiences that all parents can contribute to our meetings. La Leche League of Wisconsin remains dedicated to remaining an open and affirming, nurturing and safe environment for all parents and babies and their families, regardless of their birth or breastfeeding experience or family composition.
La Leche League USA (LLL USA) is committed to diversity and inclusion. LLL USA supports all breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk feeding families, inclusive of their race, ethnicity, immigration status, national origin, creed, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, family structure, primary language, ability, or socio-economic status. LLL USA fosters diversity among its Leaders so as to incorporate a wide variety of perspectives and responsible decision-making.
Professional medical or lactation providers are welcome at our meeting, but only in their role of breastfeeding parent. We do not and will not endorse specific products or providers. The advertising or endorsing of individual businesses or services is not allowed at La Leche League meetings. This means arrangements need to be made to discuss enrollment in childbirth classes, private lactation service, etc., at some other time and place away from the meeting location. Business cards may not be passed out at any time before or during the meeting because Leaders act only on behalf of LLL during an LLL meeting. Your information will not be used for business contact purposes (by a Leader or a mother).
LLL USA also remains committed to honoring the spirit and the letter of the WHO Code – the World Health Organization (WHO) International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and subsequent WHA Resolutions. LLL USA does not condone any actions that would allow a company that is not upholding its obligations under the WHO Code to advertise at La Leche League events. The following are statements of LLLI's philosophy:
- Parenting through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby.
- Nursing parent and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply.
- In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with a parent, which is as basic as its need for food.
- Human milk is the natural food for babies, uniquely meeting their changing needs.
- For the healthy, full-term baby, human milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth.
- Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need.
- Alert and active participation by the parent in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start.
- Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by loving support, help, and companionship of others. This unique relationship with a baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy.
- Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible.
- From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.
We have always made it a priority to follow the Purpose of La Leche League:
- La Leche League was founded to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal help, to all parents who want to use human milk to feed their babies.
- LLL believes that breastfeeding, with its many important physical and psychological advantages, is best for baby and nursing parent and is the ideal way to initiate good parent-child relationships.
- LLL further believes that parenting through breastfeeding/chestfeeding deepens a parent's understanding and acceptance of the responsibilities and rewards of their special role in the family.
- The League's purpose is distinct. This singleness of purpose does not prevent interaction with other organizations with compatible purposes, but La Leche League will carefully guard against allying itself with another cause, however worthwhile that cause may be.
